Your Essential February Garden Checklist
February is a turning point in the garden. Winter hasn’t quite loosened its grip, but signs of spring are starting to appear. This is the month to prepare, prune, and plan, so you’re ready to hit the ground running in March.
Key jobs for February
1. Prune shrubs and roses
- Prune roses this month to encourage strong spring growth
- Cut back deciduous shrubs if you didn’t earlier in winter
- Remove dead, damaged, or crossing branches
2. Tidy borders and beds
- Clear away dead stems (leave some if wildlife is still using them)
- Weed on dry days — it’s much easier now than later
- Add compost or mulch to improve soil before spring growth starts
3. Lawn preparation
- Rake off debris and leaves
- Lightly spike compacted areas to improve drainage
- Avoid mowing unless growth is strong and conditions are dry
4. Start sowing (under cover)
- Sow sweet peas, tomatoes, chillies, and early herbs indoors
- Check seed stock and order anything you’re missing
5. Support wildlife
- Keep feeding birds — this is one of the hardest months for them
- Provide fresh water daily and avoid disturbing hibernating animals
