How to Prepare Your Garden for Frost and Snow

Frosty mornings and the first snow flurries might look magical, but they can wreak havoc on unprotected gardens. Here’s how to keep your plants, pots, and garden structures safe this winter.

1. Wrap Up Tender Plants

Use horticultural fleece or bubble wrap to insulate tree ferns, palms, and bananas. Don’t forget pots — roots are more vulnerable than foliage.

2. Move Pots Closer to Shelter

Place containers against house walls or in sheds/greenhouses to reduce exposure to frost.

3. Mulch, Mulch, Mulch!

Add a thick mulch layer around perennials and shrubs to protect roots and conserve moisture.

4. Protect Water Features & Ponds

Float a tennis ball on the surface to prevent ice forming solidly and harming wildlife.

5. Check Structures & Fences

Repair any loose panels, trellis, or greenhouse panes before winter winds cause damage.

Final Thought: A few small frost-proofing steps in November make a huge difference by February!
