Autumn Lawn Care: How to Prepare Your Grass for Winter

By September, summer has taken its toll on lawns — heavy use, heat stress, and drought may have left them patchy. The good news? Autumn is the perfect season to repair and strengthen grass before winter sets in.

1. Scarify and Rake

Remove moss, thatch, and debris so air and nutrients reach the soil.

2. Aerate the Soil

Spike holes with a fork or use a hollow-tine aerator to improve drainage and root growth.

3. Overseed Thin Patches

Rake, sow, and water. Overseeding now ensures strong growth by spring.

4. Apply Autumn Feed

Choose a feed that’s low in nitrogen (to slow soft leafy growth) and high in potassium (to strengthen roots).

5. Raise the Mower Blades

Cut less frequently and a little higher to reduce stress.

Tip: September lawn care is like giving your grass a health boost before its winter rest. Come spring, you’ll notice the difference!
