Lawn Care in January: What You Should (and Shouldn’t) Do
Your lawn isn’t growing much in January, but what you do (or don’t do) now has a big impact on spring recovery.
What you should do
- Keep leaves off the lawn so it can breathe
- Stay off frosty grass — footprints can bruise it and leave brown patches
- If it’s waterlogged, aerate compacted spots with a fork on a mild day
- Keep edges and paths tidy to stop mud being tracked onto the lawn
What you shouldn’t do
- Don’t mow unless it’s mild and the lawn is dry (and only on a high setting)
- Don’t feed with spring fertiliser — it encourages soft growth that frost damages
- Don’t scarify hard in January; wait for spring when the grass can recover
Quick “winter lawn” rule
If it’s frozen, soaked, or snowy — leave it alone. Your lawn will thank you.
