Winter Patio and Driveway Safety: Prevent Slips, Algae and Moss
December is peak season for slippery patios and driveways. Moss and algae love damp, shaded surfaces — and leaves make it worse.
Why it gets slippery
- Algae forms a thin film (often invisible until it’s wet)
- Moss holds water and creates slick patches
- Leaf litter blocks drainage and keeps surfaces damp
What you can do now
- Sweep weekly (especially after windy days)
- Clear gutters/drains so water doesn’t pool
- Trim back overhanging plants to let in light and airflow
- Consider a winter clean if algae/moss is established
A note on pressure washing
Jet washing can be brilliant, but it needs the right approach for the surface (stone, block paving, decking) so joints and finishes aren’t damaged.
