Protecting Your Plants in Winter: Frost, Wind and Waterlogging
Winter damage in the UK usually comes from three things: frost, wind, and waterlogged soil. The good news is you can prevent most problems with a few simple steps.
Frost: insulate the roots first
Roots are often more vulnerable than leaves.
- Mulch around plants to keep soil temperature steadier
- Move pots into shelter (against a house wall is ideal)
- Use fleece on tender shrubs during cold snaps
Wind: stop rock and breakage
Wind can loosen roots (especially new shrubs) and snap stems.
- Firm in newly planted shrubs and stake if needed
- Tie climbers securely to supports
- Prune tall, floppy growth that’s likely to whip about
Waterlogging: the silent killer
Many plants hate sitting in wet soil for weeks.
- Keep gutters and drains clear so water flows away
- Aerate compacted lawns and borders with a fork
- Raise pots onto feet so they can drain freely
- Avoid working wet soil — it compacts and makes drainage worse
