Winter Garden Checklist: What to Do in December

December gardens are mostly about protection, safety, and planning. Growth slows right down, but a few smart jobs now keep everything healthy and make spring far easier.

1. Keep paths and patios safe

Wet leaves, algae and winter grime make hard surfaces slippery.

  • Sweep leaves off paths, steps and patios
  • Keep drains and channels clear so water doesn’t pool
  • If it’s icy, use grit rather than salt around plants

2. Protect plants from frost

  • Add a thick mulch (compost/bark/leaf mould) around shrubs and perennials
  • Wrap tender plants (cordylines, tree ferns, citrus) with fleece on cold nights
  • Group pots together in a sheltered spot, off bare ground if possible

3. Look after the lawn

  • Avoid walking on frosty grass (it bruises and can turn brown)
  • Keep leaves off the lawn so it can breathe
  • If it’s mild and dry, a very occasional high cut is fine — otherwise leave it be

4. Support winter wildlife

  • Keep feeders topped up (sunflower hearts, suet, peanuts)
  • Provide fresh water daily (and break ice gently)
  • Leave a quiet corner with leaves/logs for shelter

5. Plan for spring

Now’s the perfect time to:

  • Decide what you want more of next year (colour, privacy, low maintenance, wildlife)
  • Make a shortlist of jobs for February/March (pruning, lawn renovations, border refresh)
  • Book in early if you want spring tidy-ups or planting
